The opening sequence began with a shot of a wood background. A paper rolls up as the Home Improvement logo is formed. Tim pops up with a ruler next to it, and moves his mouth. We cut to a closeup shot of Tim, he puts his goggles on, and uses a sledgehammer to hit the wall. Jill pops in, and Tim looks on astonishment by waving at her.

Mr. Binford then forces Tim to camp that weekend, and Jill isn't very pleased. However, Tim is too distracted by a football game to pay attention to her. Meanwhile, the kids lock the magician in a trunk as part of a magic trick...with unexpected results. Jill has a job interview, but she doesn't get it and when Tim tries to comfort her, he only makes matters worse. After talking to Wilson, Tim tries again and succeeds.

Episode Info

Tim has to re-light the pilot light of the furnace and he decides to show Randy and Brad how to do it. While in the basement, they discover something moving down there.

But Mark gets his own back when Tim and Jill dress up as aliens and scare Brad and Randy. Jill has ignored the car's oil warning light for two days, and the car becomes inoperative. Tim then gives a speech on Tool Time about respect for the machines. He tells the audience about the oil light incident that happened to "a friend".

Tim gets Jill a lifetime membership to a health care club, until she says she will never exercise again. Brad and Randy spend all of their money on a baseball card, so they make Mark give them a "brother tax" to get Jill a present. Tim decides to do a Tool Time special for women to teach plumbing. After being called an idiot by Randy, Brad worries that he will do bad on a test. The K&B Construction guys are invited on Tool Time to show how to make hot gourmet meals while on the job site.

Meanwhile, Brad and Randy create "The Tadpole Secrecy Test" for Mark, who wants them to play with him. The test involves Mark holding a live tadpole in his mouth for three seconds, but he accidentally swallows it. Tim makes plans to go with Jill to a romantic getaway.

They use the tools of their trade to make meals anyone would be proud of. At home, Jill is fed up with Brad and Randy excluding Mark from their games so she has a talk with them. Brad and Randy tell Mark that they, along with Tim and Jill, are aliens from outer space.

The season introduces the Taylors, the average American family, that really aren't so. Tim Taylor, the man of the house, has his own Tool TV show entitled "Tool Time" with a bachelor co-host Al Borland. Tim is also found to be accident prone and often wanting to rewire and fix things around the house and at work. Jill Taylor is Tim's loving wife, but continually gives him grief over some of the trouble he causes. There is no Audience Score because there are not enough user ratings at this time.

Tim and Mark dress up as women to help her get over her fear. Jill doesn't believe Tim could teach the boys good manners, and get rid of their gross antics. So, Jill makes a bet with Tim, and when the day finally comes, Jill is very surprised with what she sees. Tim's free-spirited college pal drives Jill crazy when he comes to visit.
